AVI to MPEG2
MPEG Layer 2 is the format used to burn a dvd disc playable on household dvd players. Obviously this can be done in many ways and with many applications, this is just one way.
You need:
VirtualDub. This is free.
TMPGEnc. This is a TRIAL VERSION.
Open VirtualDub.
File > Open Video File
Browse to your AVI file > Open
If you get this popup, it's VirtualDub telling you that it may have to make a slight correction to your file. It will do this automatically if it needs to, and if you're happy with this, then click OK. If you'd prefer to alter it yourself precisely, then follow the instructions on the popup.
(Personally, I've never had any problems letting VirtualDub just get on with it.)
Audio > Full Processing Mode
File > Save wav
Browse to the folder your AVI is in. Give your wav a name. Save.
This will give you a BIG wav file.
Open TMPGEnc
Close down this Wizard.
Video Source: Click Browse and find your original AVI file. Open.
Audio Source: Click Browse and find your wav file. Open.
Output File Name: Browse to a folder where you want to save your finished mpg. NB! If you save it in the same folder as your original, RENAME IT.
Click Load to select your region. (PAL (MPEG-2) for Europe. NTSC (MPEG-2) for the US).
Start.
TMPGEnc will tell you that you need a dvd player to view the file. Click Continue.
This takes quite a few hours.
The file you now have will have the extension .mpg and can be burned to DVD disc to watch on most players.
